What is quantity surveying in construction? 

Quantity surveying in construction involves the meticulous management of costs and risks while overseeing a wide range of tasks during a construction project from start to finish. 

Quantity Surveyors are skilled in accurately estimating, controlling, and reporting on the costs associated with the project lifecycle. They will conduct feasibility plans and prepare detailed cost estimates and bills of quantities based on architectural and engineering drawings.  

They will assist in procuring materials and subcontractor services, working out the quantities and costs of materials, tendering contracts, and negotiating prices to secure the best value for the project within an agreed timeline. 

Once work begins, the Quantity Surveyor plays a vital role in ensuring that projects remain on budget, driving quality standards and delivering client and stakeholder expectations. They will track variations and assess the financial implications of potential changes, managing the contractual relationships between clients, contractors, and suppliers. Their responsibilities also include resolving disputes and ensuring accurate and prompt payments. 

Their expertise in cost management and contract administration helps to safeguard the financial interests of all parties involved in the construction process.
